FAQ for Zebra GK420t Ribbons

What is the difference between Zebra GK420t and GK420d models?

Short version is GK420t uses thermal transfer ribbons; GK420d is direct thermal (no ribbon needed).
Longer version is GK420t and GK420D are two versions of the GK420 desktop label printer. As the last letter D indicates, the GK420D is a direct thermal transfer, meaning that no ribbons are needed for printing. You will only need direct thermal labels. On the other hand, the GK420t, as the last letter T indictes, is a thermal transfer printer, which means it requires thermal transfer ribbon in order to print and thermal transfer labels are to be used with the ribbon.

What size (length and width) thermal transfer ribbons can be used on the GK420t printer?

Standard ribbon length for Zebra GK420t is 244 feet or 74 meter. Allowed width of the ribbon range from 1.33"/33.8mm to 4.33"/110mm. Normally the width of the ribbon needs to be at least half inch wider than the target print area. Choose the the right size that fit your print needs.

What type of thermal transfer ribbons can be used?

The Zebra GK420t printer supports four thermal transfer ribbon formulations:wax, resin-enhanced wax, wax-resin, and resin. For the four different options, as resin content increases, so does the ribbon's print durability and abrasion resistance especially when exposed to extreme environments involving freezing temperature, oil and chemicals etc. Here is a breakdown of each ribbon type with its use cases, compatible media and substrates and suitable industries. General Purpose Wax – economical, shipping label and short-term indoor use such warehouse storage labels and tags etc on paper substrates.
Resin‑Enhanced Wax – moisture-resistant for longer-lasting prints with better resistance to abrasion.
Wax‑Resin – adds durability for coated paper/synthetics, ideal for poly bag printing.
Resin – maximum durability for harsh conditions including freezing temperature, exposure to oil or chemical etc on synthetic substrates.
